Sonic Foundry Vegas Pro

: Not much.

Vegas Pro is a fast, non-destructive multi-track audio / media editing tool aimed at the Professional Musician, Audio Engineer, Desktop Musician, Home Recording Enthusiast, Internet Content Developer, Broadcast Engineer and Multimedia Production.

Vegas Pro allows you to record right into it and then perform any number of non-destructive edits, it supports both video and audio making it an idea tool for the multimedia developer, although as mentioned above its designed for a whole community of users.

When I was first asked to review this product I imagined a highly complex user interface, with numerous mixing board type controls.

Well I'm pleased to say that the interface is extremely well designed and extremely easy to use. Unlike a mixing deck the interface resembles a window application, you can even resize the windows to suit your requirements.

The top part of the screen is where your video and sound files are displayed, in the screen shot you will notice that each frame of the video is displayed and the sound tracks are displayed directly underneath. Controls surround this like bees around a honey pot and one of the most useful features I found was the explorer window, you can double click any audio or video file and Vegas Pro will load it into your current project, alternatively you can drag items into place.

Now that we've looked over the interface lets have a look at the features on offer:

24-bit/96 kHz for unparalleled audio resolution.
Unlimited tracks limits only based on CPU/RAM processing power.
Non-destructive editing each event in the track view is simply a reference to files on the disk.

(.WAV/.AIF) on a single track.
Real-time file/event resampling allows mixing of files of various sample rates on one track without conversion.

Direct Internet streaming file authoring: Microsoft Windows Media Format (.ASF) and Windows Media Audio (.WMA) and RealNetworks RealMedia G2 (.RM) no need for special file conversion. Save to streaming media directly from Vegas Pro.
Ability to incorporate timeline metadata (markers/captions) for advanced Internet content authoring editable captions and markers can be placed anywhere on the timeline.
Imports/supports: .wav, .aif, .avi, .mov (using Microsoft DirectShow), .mpg (video), .bmp, .mp3
Exports/saves: .wav, .aif, .avi, .wma, .asf, .rm, .mp3

Quite an impressive list of features, indeed this product is something special, its performance is outstanding, especially with the ability to utilise system resources to the fullest, meaning that the better the machine running Vegas Pro the better the performance. I would personally urge anyone interested in looking over a multi-track editing tool to download this, its extremely easy to get to grips with.

My one gripe about Vegas Pro, is the mandatory registration system, yes to use this product you must register it, which results in a registration key being emailed to you, enter this within the seven day time frame and the products keeps working, fail to enter it and it simply stops until such time as you do so.

Editor's Note: From Sonic Foundry - 'Secure installation' is meant as a copy protection. It ensures people that pay $699 (or 399 pounds in the UK) that they are not paying for people that copy the software illegally.
